During World War Two Loch Striven was used as a training area for the Royal Navy. This was a most secret operation and the divers who went on to great fame with the Navy’s midget submarines were trained in the Loch. Ardtarig served as the Officers Mess. Loch Striven is still used by the Royal Navy for the testing of submarines based in the nearby Holy Loch area.
One of the first commercial salmon farms in Scotland was established in Loch Striven, at Ardtarig nearly 40 years ago and has provided stock for many other Scottish farms.
The land surrounding Ardtarig House, being the estate, extends for something like 25 square miles. The land was farmed for sheep after the “clearances” but is now, somewhat ironically, not commercially viable for that purpose and is now mostly used for forestry.
